Men must become allies in the workplace to tackle gender bias and discrimination, according to Joanne Lipman, a lecturer at Yale University and author. Women are frequently subject to microaggressions, extra unpaid labour and further barriers to advancement, according to LeanIn.org and McKinsey & Company research. Lipman suggests five ways men can support their female colleagues, including interrupting those who interrupt women, amplifying women’s contributions in meetings and becoming “brag buddies”. She also recommends men taking paternity leave and not making assumptions about female colleagues’ career aspirations.
