Major John Egan was a commander in the “Bloody 100th” Bomb Group during World War II. He was known for flying with his men on tough missions and writing personalized letters to the families of fallen soldiers. Egan and his friend Gale Cleven, also known as “Bucky,” made a strong impression on replacement crews. Egan was a mentor figure and a role model to the high casualty rates suffered by the 100th Bomb Group. Their story will be featured in the upcoming Apple TV+ miniseries Masters of the Air.
