The world’s first magma observatory, called the Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT), is being developed in remote Iceland. The observatory aims to monitor volcanoes, advance volcanology and geothermal energy technology, and improve monitoring of potential eruptions. The KMT project began in 2009 when the state-owned geothermal energy company, Landsvirkjun, accidentally struck magma while drilling for supercritical water reservoirs. Financing from various government programs has allowed the KMT to enter a testing phase. The project aims to provide direct samples and observations of magma, improving civil protection for those living near active volcanoes. The initial drilling attempt is set for 2026.
