Dairo Antonio Úsuga, also known as Otoniel, the former leader of a Colombian drug cartel and paramilitary group, has been sentenced to 45 years in a U.S. prison. He pleaded guilty to high-level drug trafficking charges and admitted to overseeing the smuggling of cocaine and engaging in violence with guerrillas and criminal gangs. Colombian President Iván Duque has described Úsuga as the “most dangerous drug trafficker in the world.” The Gulf Clan, led by Úsuga, is known for its brutality and control over smuggling routes. The organization operates in 13 of Colombia’s departments and has been involved in a turf war resulting in a significant increase in homicides.
