Our 'quick read' news summary

The scimitar-horned oryx, previously declared extinct in the wild, has been upgraded to endangered status by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This is the first time a species has moved from “Extinct in the Wild” to “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List. The recovery of the oryx was made possible by conservation efforts from zoos worldwide and game breeders in Texas, as well as a reintroduction program in Chad’s Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve. The project involved assembling captive animals from various sources to ensure genetic diversity, and the population is now increasing.
