Facebook parent company Meta Platform Inc. has rejected the advice of its oversight board to suspend the Facebook and Instagram accounts of former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, who had threatened violence against political opponents. While Meta will remove the content that led to the review, it will not ban Hun Sen’s use of the site, citing its commitment to voice and the restriction of public figures’ accounts. The oversight board had ordered the removal of a video and called for a six-month suspension of Hun Sen’s accounts, marking the first time the board instructed the shutdown of a government leader’s account. Cambodia has now banned the oversight board members from visiting the country, accusing them of interference in Cambodian affairs.
