Activist Bui Tuan Lam, known as “Onion Bae,” has lost his appeal against a five and a half year prison sentence in Vietnam. Bui was convicted of propaganda for criticizing the government online. His wife was not allowed to attend the hearing, and his lawyer was not permitted to meet him prior to the appeal. Bui gained attention in 2021 for a viral video mocking Vietnam’s minister of public security. Vietnam frequently uses Article 117 of the country’s Penal Code to restrict freedom of expression and silence government criticism. At least 60 people have been convicted under this article.
