Vietnamese political prisoner Nguyen Thuy Hanh has been diagnosed with advanced stage cervical cancer. Hanh, an activist being held at a mental hospital in Hanoi, had been suffering from poor health but chose not to discuss it publicly. Authorities have taken her to a cancer institute, but she has been unable to receive treatment due to overcrowding. Hanh was arrested in April 2021 on charges of “anti-state propaganda” and has been mistreated and deprived of adequate food and water during her detention, according to her husband. Human rights groups have called for her release and proper medical care.
