Vietnam’s government has ordered Peoples’ Committees nationwide to eliminate the World Mission Society of Church of God, which has been rapidly expanding in the country. The church, also known as Church of God the Mother, is considered a cult by traditional Christian churches and its followers believe that its deceased leader was the second coming of Jesus Christ. The committees are instructed to dissolve and revoke permits of groups practicing the religion and prevent them from creating new groups. Vietnam’s constitution technically allows freedom of religion, but authorities can override this for national security purposes.
