The U.S. is searching for debris from a suspected Chinese spy balloon that was shot down by the U.S. Air Force. The Chinese have threatened retaliation if the U.S. does not stop its search. The U.S. says the balloon was a surveillance balloon that strayed into U.S. airspace and was shot down because it was a threat to national security. The search for the balloon’s debris is anticipated to be fairly easy and the U.S. is hopeful that it will be able to recover all of the balloon’s debris and any material of intelligence value. This is the second time in a year that a Chinese surveillance balloon has flown over U.S. territory. The U.S. response to the incident has diminished the chance of a thaw in the bilateral relations.
