The Union Cabinet in India has approved a major spectrum auction across various bands to improve mobile telecommunication services and coverage. The spectrum auction, with a reserve price of Rs 96,317.65 crore, aims to unlock crucial resources for faster and more reliable mobile connectivity. The government also plans to assign 5 MHz spectrum in the 700 MHz band to multiple rail-based transit systems to improve passenger safety and operations. Additionally, a committee will be established to explore reallocating spectrum usage based on current demands and advancements in technology. India’s 5G rollout has already covered 740 districts and the government aims to further strengthen telecom infrastructure for future technologies like 6G.
