The Biden administration has given approval for the release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian money from South Korea to Qatar, as part of a deal to secure the release of five American citizens detained in Iran. In return, the US has agreed to release five Iranian citizens held in the United States. Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed off on the sanctions waivers, which will allow international banks to transfer the funds without fear of US sanctions. The waiver comes after an agreement in principle was reached between US and Iranian officials.
