Two years after Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) called for armed rebellion against the coup leaders, anti-junta forces, known as the Peoples’ Defense Force (PDF), have become well-organized and are making gains against the military. The NUG president claims that the PDF has improved in effectiveness and can now form strategic and well-organized regiments armed with automatic rifles and attack drones. The NUG Ministry of Defense states that anti-junta forces are in a “pre-offensive” against the regime and have gained control of new territory. However, a think tank director dismisses the NUG’s claims as “baseless” propaganda.
