The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 and was followed by a magnitude-4.9 aftershock. The epicenter was in the Atlas Mountains, 43.5 miles south of Marrakech. Variations in early measurements are common, but this is one of the strongest earthquakes in Morocco in years.
