Tancred option for gun colt Anamoe

Trainer James Cummings has entered runaway Rosehill Guineas winner Anamoe for the Tancred which has attracted 15 nominations including Think It Over, Duais, Angel Of Truth, Great House, She’s Ideel, Stockman and The Chosen One.The notable omissions from the Tancred entries are Montefilia and Verry Elleegant after the mares fought out the finish of the Ranvet Stakes last Saturday.Cummings hasn’t locked in Tancred start for Anamoe just yet as he weighs up whether his colt needs another race before his main target this autumn, the Group 1 $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick during The Championships on April 9.“We will see how Anamoe does this week but to my eye, immediately after the Rosehill Guineas, he looked fantastic,” Cummings said. “It was such a soft victory, it looked like he had hardly been around. He is full of confidence now, he’s very fit and is taking his racing beautifully.”Cummings is also cognisant of the fact the Queen Elizabeth Stakes will attract an outstanding field and that only one three-year-old has been able to win the race since it was made a 2000m weight-for-age race in 1979, which was Intergaze in 1997.With this in mind, Cummings is considering if Anamoe needs a 2400m start in either the Tancred Stakes or the Group 1 $2 million ATC Australian Derby at Royal Randwick on April 2 to ensure the colt is at his peak for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.“Anamoe will be going into a very tough weight-for-age race in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes against Verry Elleegant and Montefilia, Zaaki just won the All-Star Mile, don’t forget my brother’s horse (Edward Cummings-trained) Duais who won the Australian Cup with Think It Over behind her,” Cummings said.“These are top, top horses and it (Queen Elizabeth) won’t look like anything less than the race of the carnival.“He is going to need to be fully fit and very, very tough to overcome those horses.”Cummings would also be aware the record of three-year-olds in the Tancred since 1979 is more encouraging with his father Anthony’s gelding, Fiveandahalfstar the most recent winner in 2013.Other three-year-olds to have won the Tancred during this period are Grand Zulu (2004), Curata Storm (2001), Octagonal (1996), Stony Bay (1995), Kaaptive Edition (1993), Heroicity (1992), Beau Zam (1988) Myocard (1987), Bonecrusher (1986) and the legendary Kingston Town (1980).Anamoe handled the heavy track at Rosehill last Saturday with ease as he streaked away to win the Rosehill Guineas so the likelihood of another heavy surface won’t concern the Godolphin stable if they decide to press on to the Tancred.TAB Fixed Odds price assessors are taking no chances with Anamoe, installing the colt at $4.50 in early Tancred Stakes betting behind $3 favourite Duais and Think It Over at $4.But Kerry Parker, trainer of Think It Over, wants a drying surface for his stable star’s first attempt at 2400m.“I want to give Think It Over his chance in the Tancred as I feel he will run the trip,” Parker said.“I’m hoping we don’t get the rain that is forecast for later this week, we don’t want a heavy track.”Parker said Think It Over has “bounced back well” since returning to the trainer’s Kembla Grange stables after his second to Duais in the Australian Cup at Flemington.
