According to a new analysis, PM2.5 pollution in rural and urban India has decreased by around 19% between 2017 and 2022. Uttar Pradesh saw the largest decline of 38%, while Maharashtra had the least decrease. The study also showed that PM2.5 levels were highest in 2017 and lowest in 2020. The analysis emphasizes the need for the next phase of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) to cover rural areas and highlights the importance of airshed management and hyper-local pollution control. The NCAP aims to reduce PM2.5 and PM10 concentration by 20-30% by 2024.
