Deforestation in Brazil’s Cerrado region increased by nearly 45% in 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching the highest level since 2019. The National Institute for Space Research reported that 7,852 square kilometers of vegetation were destroyed in the Cerrado biome, home to diverse wildlife and a significant portion of Brazil’s biodiversity. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has reduced deforestation in the Amazon but has faced challenges in addressing deforestation in the Cerrado, as most of it occurs on private land. The Cerrado is not as well-known internationally, leading to fewer policies for its conservation.
