A new study has found that cats have nearly 300 different facial expressions to communicate their feelings. Researchers recorded video footage of 53 cats at a Los Angeles cat cafe and discovered that cats have as much facial expression variance as dogs. The complexity of the expressions comes from the combination of 26 unique facial movements, including ear, nose, and whisker positions. The majority of the expressions were sociable and meant to communicate with other cats or humans. The study also found that domestic cats share similar aspects of the “common play face” observed in other mammals.
