Residents in Hastings and Rangitikei in the central North Island are being warned of severe thunderstorms accompanied by torrential rain. The thunderstorms, detected near the Kaweka Range and the Kaimanawa mountains, are moving southeast and could cause surface and flash flooding. A severe thunderstorm watch is also in place for parts of Taranaki, Taumarunui, Taupō, Taihape, and Whanganui, with localised downpours of 25mm to 40mm per hour expected. Earlier in the afternoon, 1035 lightning strikes were detected across the central North Island, with no signs of slowing down.
