Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast have discovered a new type of cosmic explosion, which is brighter than most supernovae and lasts less than half the time. The explosion, named AT2022aedm, was observed using the ATLAS network of telescopes and was found to be unlike any known supernova. The event occurred in a massive, red galaxy two billion light years away, which was previously believed to be void of any star large enough to cause a supernova. The researchers have named this new class of sources “Luminous Fast Coolers” or LFCs, partly in homage to their favorite sports team, Liverpool Football Club.
