Radiotherapy, instead of surgery, is a “kinder” alternative to surgery for early prostate cancer patients, with far fewer side effects. The study found that those who go under the knife are 10 times more likely to suffer from some degree of urinary incontinence, one of the most common side effects of such surgery. However, radiotherapy was linked to an increased risk of bowel complaints, which occur less frequently. Experts examined 109 men getting treatment at 10 UK cancer centers and found that those who had radiotherapy reported better sexual function after two years than those who had surgery.
