Nine-year-old Sham Sheikh Mohammed was the first person to be rescued from the rubble of the February 6 earthquake in Syria. She and her brother Omar are now in Turkey for treatment after crossing the border from rebel-held northwest Syria. Sham is suffering from crush syndrome, a condition caused by being trapped under the rubble for a long period of time, and her family members were killed in the earthquake. The government has sent six other Syrian child survivors to the United Arab Emirates for treatment.
