Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled his openness to a prisoner swap with the U.S. for the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained on espionage charges for nearly a year. Putin stated that while he wants to see Gershkovich return to the U.S., he expects reciprocation from the U.S. side. The Russian President suggested that he would want Russian assassin Vadim Krasikov in exchange for Gershkovich. The U.S. State Department has made proposals for Gershkovich’s release, but Russia has rejected them. Both the U.S. and Russia have previously conducted prisoner swaps.
