In January, 29-year-old Tyre Nichols was beaten to death by Memphis police officers after a traffic stop. One of the officers, Lt. DeWayne Smith, retired the day before his termination hearing, and is not charged in the death. The U.S. Department of Justice is currently reviewing the Memphis Police Department policies on the use of force, de-escalation strategies and specialized units in response to Nichols’ death.
