Officers were called to a house on Royal Road around 5.45pm after receiving reports a woman had been seriously injured.

Detective Senior Sergeant Nick Poland said she died at the scene.

The house in Cedar Heights in the suburb of Massey was cordoned off as inquiries began.

“There will be a police presence in the area as officers conduct a scene examination and initial inquiries, which will include going to door-to-door speaking with people in the area,” he said.

Earlier in the night at least a dozen armed police were at a walkway beside a badminton centre after what they were calling a sudden death.

Police escorted a small group of people from the badminton centre on Royal Road two hours after the alarm was raised.

Members of the group told RNZ’s reporter at the scene that they had been kept inside when police cordoned off the building.

There were reports of members of the public hearing a woman screaming.

Police were understood to be searching for a weapon in the surrounding area.

There were nine police cars, fire engines and a police forensic team at the scene.

Anyone with information about what happened who has not already spoken to police was asked to contact them on 105 and refer to event number P052995437.
