Peru’s government appointed General Roger Arista as head of the National Intelligence Directorate (DINI), replacing Colonel Juan Carlos Liendo, who resigned on Tuesday after losing the confidence of President Dina Boluarte. DINI is Peru’s main intelligence agency, responsible for national, military and police intelligence, as well as counterintelligence. Since Boluarte, the former vice president, assumed the presidency, protests have turned violent, leaving 47 people dead and more than 600 injured.
