Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia celebrated the Timket festival, which marks the baptism of Jesus, in Addis Ababa. The festival began with each church carrying a sacred replica of the Ark of the Covenant called Tabot to a water source. Thousands of people in white robes gathered to sing songs and chant. Pre-sunrise rituals took place on Saturday, where priests sprinkled holy water on the congregation. The Feast of the Epiphany is one of the holiest holidays in the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian calendar and is celebrated on January 19. Many people now prefer to celebrate in Addis Ababa due to conflict in Gondar.
