Captain Leo Fransen, a firefighter from the Diamond Beach rural fire brigade, was killed by a falling tree while battling the Hudson fire near Walgett in northern NSW. He had joined the brigade in 2010 and was on a three-day deployment when the accident occurred. The fire has burned through 21,000 hectares and destroyed six homes. Fransen’s fellow strike team members have decided to continue their deployment in his memory. The NSW Rural Fire Service and Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib paid tribute to Fransen, highlighting the dangers faced by firefighters.
