More than 1,000 Chinese nationals have been arrested by Myanmar junta authorities in Namhsan, southern Shan state. The Chinese citizens may have fled from online scam crackdowns in the north and sought refuge in Namhsan due to armed conflict and a crackdown on Chinese cybercrime rings. Shan state is known for illegal activities along the Chinese border, including crystal methamphetamine trafficking. Chinese scammers have been targeting their own citizens in northern Shan state. The arrests came after rebel ethnic armies launched an offensive against junta outposts. Chinese authorities have also been cracking down on online scam operations.
