Montana has become the first state to ban people dressed in drag from reading books to children at public schools and libraries, with legislation that also seeks to limit LGBTQ+ rights. The bill, signed by Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte on Monday, defines a drag reading event as one hosted by a drag king or queen who reads children’s books to minor children. The legislation was co-sponsored by more than half of the Republican-controlled legislature, and took immediate effect. Bills in other states, including Florida and Tennessee, have also attempted to ban drag reading events, but face legal challenges.
