The African Union is making progress towards gaining a seat in the G20, with support from China, the US, and Europe. The G20 is a forum where key global governance issues are discussed, and currently represents 85% of global GDP, over 75% of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population. The African Union’s absence from the G20 has been seen as a blow to its credibility. Additionally, a scheme in Nigeria is using mobile phones to provide extension services to rural farmers, improving productivity. Uganda has also imposed a new tax on tech giants like Netflix and Facebook, which is seen as detrimental to the digital economy’s growth.
