Gabon’s former president Ali Bongo, who was ousted in a military coup, has been granted freedom to leave the country and travel abroad, according to the leader of the coup. Bongo had been under house arrest since the coup took place, following a disputed election. His health condition, resulting from a stroke in 2018, was cited as a reason for granting him freedom of movement. Bongo’s father, Omar, ruled Gabon for 41 years before him, and the coup leader claimed that the event was more of a “palace revolution” perpetuating the “Bongo system.”
