Researchers from Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast have discovered a rare skin condition in a bottlenose dolphin named Speckles. The dolphin was spotted in September 2022 in Southern Queensland’s Hervey Bay, and it is one of only six documented cases in the world. The condition, called piebaldism, is similar to albinism and leucism but does not affect the eyes. The researchers believe that Speckles is healthy overall, and they hope to conduct further genetic sampling to learn more about the condition. This is the first documented case of piebaldism in dolphins in Australia.
