Budhni Manjhiyain, a Santhali woman, passed away at the age of 80. In 1959, she was garlanded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India, at the inauguration of a dam. This act caused her to be ostracized by her tribe and she was denied entry into her hamlet for marrying outside her community. After facing many hardships, she was given a job in the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and retired in 2005. Local politicians and officials are now seeking a memorial for her and a pension for her daughter.
