In 2002, a South African diver named Tim Yarrow lived underwater inside a tank in a shopping mall for 10 days to see what would happen to him. He had to be fed and have waste removed through tubes and his hands became wrinkly and in a poor state. However, he broke a record and learned that he could stay underwater for that length of time. The wrinkly hands were explained by biologists as dead keratin cells absorbing water faster than other cells and puffing up, with nowhere else to go. Fortunately, Yarrow’s hands eventually returned to normal and he suffered no serious injuries.
