A review of China’s human rights record at the United Nations (UN) in Geneva was rushed due to an unusually high number of countries wanting to offer their views on the matter. With 160 countries signed up to criticize or praise China’s rights record, each was given just 45 seconds to speak. China’s delegation had reportedly lobbied non-Western countries to praise its human rights efforts. Western countries were critical but measured in their reviews, while the US accused China of “genocide” against the Uyghur minority. Human rights activists criticized China for undermining the UN rights process.
