More than 200 civilians, including teachers and the rector of Loikaw University, were evacuated from the university in Kayah state, Myanmar, during fighting between the military junta and the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF). The KNDF successfully occupied the university, which had been used as a base by junta soldiers who had raided nearby villages. The military junta alleged that the civilians were being detained against their will, but Karenni officials stated that they were being provided with healthcare at a safe location and denied using them as human shields. The fighting resulted in the deaths of 20 civilians and the displacement of many others.
