Joshua Sutcliffe has been banned from teaching indefinitely after “misgendering” a transgender pupil and failing to protect the pupil’s wellbeing. Sutcliffe, who believes biological sex is immutable and that homosexuality is “wrong”, has also been found guilty of misconduct after expressing his views against gay marriage when questioned by a pupil. He was also found guilty of failing to consider the potential impact of his views on pupils, particularly those from the LGBT+ community. Sutcliffe plans to appeal the decision in the High Court. The case highlights the minefield of gender self-identification in schools and the role of Christian teachers in education.
