David Johnston, appointed as a special rapporteur on foreign interference in Canadian politics, has recommended against calling a public inquiry into the issue. This comes after opposition parties called for an inquiry and the government said it would support one if Johnston recommended it. Johnston found “serious shortcomings” in the way intelligence is communicated from security agencies to government and has called for strengthening Canada’s ability to detect, deter and counter foreign interference in elections. He has asked independent government agency NSIRA and joint parliamentary committee NSICOP to review his conclusions. The RCMP is investigating the source of national security leaks.
