Japan has designated China an unprecedented “strategic challenge” and is boosting defense spending to cope with new challenges in a National Security Strategy launched Friday. In the previous security strategy formulated in 2013, Japan described China’s “external stance and military activities” as an “issue of concern.” Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner, Komeito, reached an agreement earlier this week on the draft revisions of three security documents – the National Security Strategy, the National Defense Strategy and the Defense Force Preparedness Plan.
