In January alone, landmines have killed one person and injured 22 others in Myanmar’s northern Shan state. Most of the injured victims have lost limbs due to the explosions. The highest number of injuries occurred in areas where there was intense fighting between the military junta and the Three Brotherhood Alliance, although it remains unclear which group planted the landmines. The Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor’s report states that 168 out of 330 townships in Myanmar are at risk of landmine-related death or injury, compared to 100 in 2020.
