Archaeologists in Guatemala have discovered a jade mask in the tomb of a Maya king in the ancient pyramid of Chochkitam. The pyramid had previously been looted by grave robbers, but the inner chamber was overlooked. The archaeologists found the mask, along with a human skull, bones, a coffin-like box, and other funerary offerings. Carvings on the bones suggest that the buried ruler was named Itzam Kokaj Bahlam and was associated with the Maya storm deity. The discovery provides insights into the powerful and little-understood Maya civilization during the Classic period. Researchers will continue to explore the pyramid and study the tomb’s bones for DNA.
