Indian teenager Hemesh Chadalavada has invented the Alpha Monitor, a wearable device designed to improve care for Alzheimer’s patients. Hemesh was inspired to create the device after his grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, left the gas on in the kitchen. The badge-like monitor sends out alerts if the wearer wanders off or falls. Hemesh won a $120,000 grant and the opportunity to mentor under Samsung engineers after winning a science fair. He plans to bring the Alpha Monitor to market by September and continue studying robotics abroad.
