Human Rights Watch (HRW) has responded to criticism from the Vietnamese government over its World Report 2024, which accused Vietnam of violating human rights. The Foreign Ministry claimed the report was “factually inaccurate and fabricated,” but HRW’s Deputy Asia Director, Phil Robertson, countered by stating that the Vietnamese government has a poor human rights record. The report highlighted that Vietnam currently detains over 160 people for exercising civil and political rights. Other international human rights organizations have also criticized Vietnam, including CIVICUS, Reporters Without Borders, and the Committee to Protect Journalists. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom is pushing for Vietnam to be listed as a country of concern for religious persecution.
