The privatization of Eletrobras in Brazil has raised some concerns about the future of the energy transition in the country and the effect on prices for consumers. The law that was passed to make this happen has a number of amendments that some see as favoring their own interests, and may increase energy prices for the end-consumer. The added requirement of operating thermal power plants for 70% of the time has negative implications for the future development of non-hydropower renewables. Even if the additional capacity of 8 GW of thermal gas power is installed, it is likely that these power plants will be running for a long time in order to fully amortize the investments.
