The Hastings District Council has allocated $10 million for a flood protection plan to make properties in Havelock North safe to live in again. More than 30 homes were damaged during Cyclone Gabrielle in February, leading to their categorization as unsafe to live in. The plan aims to reduce future risk in the flooded areas and hopes to have them recategorized as safe by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. The council is also seeking government funding for projects related to the Mangarau Dam and stream. The recent dam report showed that the dams performed as designed during the storm.
