Guinea-Bissau celebrated its 50th independence anniversary, as well as the 50th anniversary of its armed forces. The event included a civil and military parade and was attended by heads of state from Nigeria, Congo, the Comoros, and Portugal. The anniversary also honored the birth centenary of independence hero Amilcar Cabral, who is celebrated in both Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. President Umaru Sissoco paid tribute to all those who contributed to the country’s independence.
