The second-oldest pear tree in Britain, known as the “Cubbington Pear,” is regrowing vigorously after being transplanted to make way for a high-speed railway line. The tree, believed to be over 200 years old, was carefully chopped down and replanted just 100 meters from its original location. Landscape contractor Balfour Beatty Vinci replanted many other pear trees and thousands of additional trees to compensate for those that couldn’t be moved. Locals have also taken cuttings and grafting them to create 16 separate clones of the original tree. Ancient and elder trees are vital for ecosystem health and forest longevity.
