Paul Puletaha, a gang member from Ponsonby in Auckland, spoke about his experiences of abuse and neglect in state care at the Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry hearings in South Auckland last week. The gathering of gang members was a rare show of unity, and their shared stories of abuse were important to pass on. The royal commission is investigating the abuse of children, young people and vulnerable adults in state and faith-based institutions in Aotearoa between 1950 and 1999.
