Gabon’s military leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, has hosted newly appointed interim prime minister, Raymond Ndong Sima, and tasked him with proposing a government lineup. Ndong Sima said he would work towards restoring institutions and holding elections. Oligui, who was sworn in as interim president, vowed to hold free and transparent elections but did not provide a timeframe. Ndong Sima, a former prime minister and critic of President Ali Bongo, campaigned against him in the 2016 and 2023 elections. The military detained Bongo and his family on August 30, shortly after he was declared the winner of a presidential ballot.
